How you present yourself is one of the most important parts of having a successful career. Although in an ideal world looks wouldn’t matter, unfortunately they can have a large affect. However there are things that you can do to help land the job you want.

Hair

When it comes to hair, less is more. Too many products can lead to dry, damaged hair that is even harder to work with. It is also important to find products that work with your hair type, as everyone’s hair is different.

Before styling, it is important to take care of your hair. Here are a few tips to keep your hair healthy.

  • Comb wet hair, DON’T BRUSH! Wet hair is more fragile and brushing may lead to breakage
  • Don’t wash your hair everyday. Imagine washing your shirt everyday; it would get worn out very quickly. So does your hair.
  • Be consistent with your products. Try not to change it up too much.
  • Be sure to condition whenever you wash, and even adding things like coconut oil to your routine

When it comes to styling, be sure to keep it professional. It may be fun to try something funky on a night out, but in the workplace be sure to keep it tame. For short hairstyles, a bit of pomade can add texture and structure without looking over-gelled or over-styled. Longer hairstyles should keep it simple. If you’re looking for texture, try a sea salt spray. A professional pony or sleek down look is all it takes.

Skin

A skincare routine can seem daunting. There are so many different products, some you might not even know the purpose of, and everyone tells you something different. However, it’s okay to keep it simple.

Every skin type is different, so the first step is figuring out what you have. The most common types of skin are dry, oily, and combination. Once you figure out your skin, be sure to buy products accordingly. The three main components of a good skin routine are cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Be sure to wash your face every day and be patient. It can take up to six weeks of normal use to see results from a product, so don’t give up when your skin isn’t clear after one use.

Taking care of yourself and having a normal grooming routine affects the way you think. Your opinion of yourself can drastically change depending on the way you look and your cleanliness, and that opinion can bleed over into the work you do. It dashes your confidence, and can sour your mood. Remember, success starts at home!
