You might think your job is over after you interview for a new position but you forgot about one final task: the interview follow-up. By following up after an interview, you have the power to remind your interviewer why you’re a strong candidate for the position. Here’s how to do it.

You should thank your interviewer within 24 hours of being interviewed. If you wait too long, they might forget you amidst the many other interviews being conducted. Follow up quickly so they remember you.

Email is a great way to follow up after an interview because it’s quick and efficient. It’s easier to send an email but a phone call is also a good and more personal way to say thank you.  If you are interviewing for a job that involves a lot of communication or customer interaction, this is a great way to show off those skills. Handwritten notes are great but they should only be utilized if you can deliver it in person. If you send a handwritten note in the mail, it could take multiple days to be received which would miss the point of a quick follow-up.

Keep your message short and sweet. They have your resume and any other information they collected from your interview so there’s no need to include repeat information. If you can, include personalized information from the interview. For example instead of just saying, “It was great to meet you,” you can reference a topic that was brought up during the interview. Above all, in your follow-up message, you want to thank your interviewer for their time and the opportunity to interview for the company. Don’t be afraid to reinforce the reasons as to why you would make a good addition to their team and relay that you hope to hear from them soon. If there’s anything you forgot to say, say it here. This is your final opportunity to sell yourself.

The process after interviewing for a job can be a long waiting game. Follow these tips to make a good impression even after the interview is done.
