For many college students, self-care strategies are at the bottom of their “to-do” list. Between balancing classes, jobs and a social life, it can be difficult for students to make time for themselves. During this stressful time in your life, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to practice self-care. Here are some tips for how to take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally.
Get Some Sleep
This might seem obvious but it’s important to get enough sleep every night. In fact, the average adult needs at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night to function at their best level. If you notice you’ve been up late for a few days in a row, make an effort to try to go to bed earlier to catch up on those missed hours. If you’ve been having trouble falling asleep, take some measures to help you out. Try avoiding using electronics within an hour of trying to fall asleep or sleep with a fan or some sort of white noise machine.
Exercising regularly is a great way to keep both your body and your mind healthy. Engaging in physical activity can also lead to better academic performance and doing well in school is a definite factor in helping to control your stress level. Working out produces endorphins which lead to boosts in your mood.
If you feel happier, you’ll be more productive. Not only will your body thank you, your mind will too.
Give Yourself a Break
With all of the responsibilities that college brings to the table, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. That being said, it’s important to give your mind a break. Sometimes you might have to accept the fact that you just can’t do it all. It might sound ideal to 4.0 all of your classes, hold down a job and be the president of 3 clubs but it might not be realistic. Understand that you can only do so much and eliminate some of the stresses from your life. Focus on what is absolutely necessary and give yourself permission to cut back on things if it feels like you have too much on your plate.
