As a child, Mariam Mushtaq dreamed of becoming a dancer. Many years later, her career path has taken a different route and she currently serves as the human resources intern for boj.
We got a chance to sit down with the Wayne State University student and here’s what she said.
Can you tell us a little about your background?
Even though my nationality is Indian, I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. My family moved twice between both countries before I moved here. I received my bachelors degree in business management back in 2016 and decided to pursue my masters degree in the same year. I am currently in my second to last semester of the program and will be graduating in December.
What are some of your personal interests?
My personal interests include traveling, dancing, music, watching tons of TV shows and reading.
What brought you to boj?
I heard of boj via LinkedIn promotions and reached out for internship opportunities. I think boj uses a very creative concept that aligns with today’s world where social media is so prominent and I am happy to be part of it.
How did you find out about boj and what inspired you to pursue an internship with us?
I received a message promoting boj and I followed up. I later received an email from a fellow Wayne State student asking me to reach out to the company for brand ambassador opportunities. I introduced myself and inquired whether there were any internship opportunities available and, as a business student, I figured it would be an incredible opportunity to work at a startup company.
Do you have any specific professional goals for the next 3 to 5 years once you’ve completed your internship?
My short term goal right now is to get a job in a growing company where I can build and develop my professional skills while actively contributing to the society and community. I would like to stick with HR but also experience different areas of a business such as marketing and community relations. I do not like setting goals that are too specific as I believe it restricts my opportunities to grow and learn different aspects.
Any tips for others who might be thinking about internships?
Definitely look into boj and think about the valuable knowledge and experience you will gain from working for a startup! You not only get to learn about your department but get exposed to the many different aspects of business and experience how a business grows.
One of Mushtaq’s favorite quotes is,“Life is not the party we hoped for, but while we’re here we might as well dance.”
